Screven County, Georgia

Sylvania is Screven County’s county seat. Sylvania is nestled between the Savannah and the Ogeechee Rivers in Screven County. Screven County is the tenth largest county in the state of Georgia. It‘s proximity to Savannah and Augusta makes Sylvania and Screven County a convenient place to visit and live. The Savannah River Parkway, a four lane highway, between Savannah and Augusta, will make Screven County an easy drive for a day trip or extending your vacation.

Things to Do:

  • Sylvania Visitor Information Center: The oldest operating visitor center in the United States continues to serve visitors and guest traveling the scenic Highway 301 route. It was the first visitor center built in Georgia. The original architecture and beautiful landscape makes it an attraction of its own. Sylvania Visitor Information Center continues to serve free Coca-Cola products, provided by the Georgia based company.
  • Shopping and Dining: Sylvania has shopping and dining for everyone for any occasion.
  • Screven County-Big on Fishing: Screven County is between the Savannah River and the Ogeechee River. Fishing is also encouraged at the Tuckahoe Wildlife Management Area.
  • Burton’s Ferry Boating Landing on the Savannah River: Governor Sonny Perdue announced that Burton’s Ferry Landing was selected for the Go Fish Georgia Program for the State of Georgia. The Go Fish Initiative is great news for fisherman and the local economy. The program is designed to promote and enhance boating and fishing tourism.
  • In Search of that Perfect Hunting Experience: Screven County, Georgia is known for its great hunting. The Tuckahoe Wildlife Management Area provides 15,000 acres of land for hunting, camping, hiking and fishing.
  • Robbins Grist Mill: Established in 1803, the Robbins Grist Mill is one the last original operating grist mill in Georgia. The family owned mill operates every 1st and 3rd Saturday from October until April located on the Savannah River Parkway, north of Newington, Georgia.
  • Wade Plantation: Established in 1823, the Wade Plantation is one of the largest irrigated pecan orchards in the South. If you have never had the chance to taste their fresh and flavorful pecans, you are truly missing out. Their plantation store offers a wide variety of nuts including chocolate covered pecans, toasted, spicy and sweet pecans.
  • Screven Motor Speedway: Thrilling dirt track racing and ¼ mile drag racing competitions every other weekend. The speedway attracts folks from all across the state.
  • Savannah River Preserve: The property is over 1200 acres of planted pine, hardwood, swamps and field food plots with an abundance of wild game. Activities include sporting clays, sporting clay stands, wobble traps, an indoor archery range. Cabins are also available. The preserve has been featured in Southland Magazine.
  • Briar Creek Revolutionary Battle Field: Come discover a major American Battlefield as part of the nation’s past, right here in Screven County.
  • March to the Sea Heritage Trail: A part of the civil war historic driving route by the Georgia’s Civil War Heritage trails.
  • Screven County Recreation Facility: That includes a walking trail of 1.34 miles, 6 lane pool, 8 baseball / soft ball fields, 2 open pavilions, outdoor basketball facility, gym for basketball and volleyball and a community center.
  • The Dell Goodall House: located in the small community of Jacksonboro (the former county seat) and built in 1815, has weathered the elements of the rain, wind and fire.

  • Downtown Sylvania is a Better Hometown designated area which has received six awards of excellence by the State of Georgia and has received the National Trust for Historic accreditation.
  • Screven County Historical Museum: The historic jail on East Ogeechee Street is being preserved for the County Museum, currently under construction, will display heirlooms and historical pieces from Screven County.
  • The Soda Shop Gallery is a renovated historic building on the Downtown Square and features local art and sponsors events like Picnic in the Park, story telling, book signings, watercolor classes and much more. Come see the local talent Screven County has to offer.
  • Come try the local favor. See what is on the menu at our local restaurants. There is something for everyone’s taste, from a great steak, seafood, Mexican, Chinese or a southern style cooked meal that many come from miles to experience. Donna’s Bakery and Deli, one of our establishments, has been featured in Southern Living Magazine.
  • Shannon Farms and Winery: The winery is locally owned and will open in the fall of 2008. Located on the Savannah River Parkway, north of Newington, Georgia
  • Sylvania Farmers Market located in Downtown Sylvania. (Seasonal)

Annual Events

  • Screven County Livestock Festival and Parade: The annual festival begins the 57th year in April.
  • Georgia on My Mind Day: Based on Visitor Peak Day, the Georgia Visitor Center in Sylvania host a full day of fun filled activities and regional booths free to the public.
  • Sylvania’s Annual Christmas Extravaganza is the first Thursday in December, and features local art, entertainment, vendors, and of course, Santa Claus.
  • The Sylvania Sampler is the third Saturday in September of each year. The event is held on the courthouse lawn and features craft vendors from all across the state.
  • The Southern Cruisers Car Show is a new event for Screven County, and will be held in November. The show features cars and trucks in over 50 categories. The event will include venders and music.
